Infrastructure Development Plan

Brooksville - Tampa Bay Regional Airport’s Infrastructure Development Plan is moving beyond long-range planning with a funded initiative focused on expanding access to the airport’s west side. A central component of the project will convert an inactive runway into an active taxiway, extending direct airfield access to future aviation-development areas and improving the development potential of adjacent landside property.

The project is designed to transform underused airport land into a platform for business recruitment, private investment and enhance high wage employment opportunities. As infrastructure improvements advance, prospective companies can begin coordinating site selection, leasing, facility design, land preparation, and construction with the airport’s implementation schedule. This allows public infrastructure and private development to move forward together rather than requiring businesses to wait until every improvement is complete.

Key priorities of the Infrastructure Development Plan include:

  • Activating an inactive runway for use as a west-side taxiway

  • Extending airfield access to future aviation-development parcels

  • Opening additional land for airside and adjacent landside development

  • Supporting site access and the infrastructure required for new facilities

  • Coordinating infrastructure delivery with leasing and private development

  • Creating scalable opportunities for hangars, MRO facilities, aerospace manufacturing, advanced air mobility, and other aviation-supportive uses

  • Strengthening the airport’s ability to recruit investment and create jobs

Design and engineering work is substantially advanced, positioning the airport to move toward implementation while continuing to market development opportunities. Together, these improvements will create a more connected and flexible development environment for aviation, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, industrial, logistics, and commercial users.

Wildlife Perimeter Fencing Improvement Project

The BKV Wildlife Perimeter Fencing Improvement Project is a safety and security project at Brooksville–Tampa Bay Regional Airport & Technology Center (BKV) designed to improve the airport’s perimeter fencing system and reduce wildlife incursions onto the airfield.

The project generally consists of the replacement, rehabilitation, and/or installation of perimeter fencing and associated improvements in areas where the existing fence is inadequate for effective wildlife exclusion. The primary purpose is to create a more secure airport boundary and reduce the potential for deer, tortoises, coyotes, and other wildlife to gain access to aircraft movement areas. Wildlife incursions present a significant aviation safety concern because of the potential for aircraft strikes, operational disruptions, and damage to aircraft and airport facilities.

Overall, the project is intended to:

  • Close gaps in the airfield perimeter by installing a new 10-foot-high Airport Operations Area (AOA) fence along segments totaling about 3,420 linear feet. This fence will be fitted with three (3) barbed wires, and 4-foot buried concrete skirts to prevent wildlife incursion.

  • Retrofit segments of the existing AOA fence with 4-foot buried concrete skirts totaling about 15,200 linear feet.

  • Remove trees, clear, and grub, and grade a 15-foot-wide corridor along either side of the new fence and where needed along the existing fence.

  • Install three (3) new AOA gates with concrete covered pads.

The project is being implemented with FAA and FDOT participation, with a federal appropriation secured by Congressman Gus Bilirakis providing $1,760,000 and FDOT providing a $246,634 state share toward the improvements. It represents a proactive investment in BKV's airfield infrastructure, particularly given the airport's mix of general aviation, corporate, flight-training, helicopter, and larger aircraft operations.

The contractor for this project is Daly & Zilch (Florida), Inc.

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)

Brooksville - Tampa Bay Regional Airport is also preparing for the future of aviation through opportunities tied to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) technologies.

This emerging industry includes:

  • Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs)

  • Drones - Manufacturing, Development, Use, Charging, and Testing.

  • Autonomous aviation systems

  • Advanced cargo and logistics platforms
